Zylkene Equine - The Zylkene Supplement for Horses
Zylkene is a unique product used to combat stress in horses. It will not make a difficult horse permanently quiet, but it can help any horse to deal with situations or events which are out of its ordinary, daily routine. Any situation which can make a horse feel more stressed, is a good reason to provide Zylkene Equine. Shoeing, travelling, clipping, visits by the vet, farrier, dentist etc. All are good reasons to use Zylkene Equine.
- Clipping
- Shoeing
- Loading into a box or trailer and travelling
- Dentist visit
- Vet visit (no adverse interaction should occur with vaccinations, veterinary medications or actual sedatives / tranquilisers if still needed)
- Confinement for Box Rest
- Introducing to new companions or places
- Weaning
- "Breaking in"
Zylkene should be given once daily with food. You should start 2 days before the expected stressful event, and give on the day itself (or for as many days as required). It can be given for longer periods, but then works best if combined with training or behaviour therapy. If used for longer than a few days without any other training being provided, it tends to lose its effect. If it has been given for a period of 20 days, it is sensible to re-assess how much progress is being made.
What is Zylkene Equine?
Zylkene Equine comes in sachets of apple flavoured powder for inclusion in feed. It contains a very specific protein (casozepine) which is derived from milk. The manufacturing process is conducted to the highest standards, as used in manufacture of human pharmaceuticals. It contains no preservatives, harmful chemicals or additives such as lactose. It is hypoallergenic and not associated with any side effects. How does Zylkene work?
The protein casozepine in Zylkene Equine is able to act on certain receptors in the horse's brain which can help produce a calm state of contentment. It is believed to be related to the feeling a foal has when suckling milk from its mother. (The same effect has been shown to occur in many other mammals. Zylkene is widely used to help dogs, cats and other animals cope with stressful situations, in the UK and many other countries.) Zylkene does NOT cause sedation and has no effect on learning and memory. When should I use Zylkene Equine?
